AutoMate Case Study

Automate was designed to solve a common problem among car owners: the lack of an easy and reliable way to track vehicle maintenance and service needs. Many drivers forget important service milestones, leading to costly repairs and reduced vehicle lifespan. My goal was to create a smart, automated solution that provides users with personalized reminders, seamless service booking, and an intuitive dashboard to track their vehicle’s health.

The core objectives of Automate included:

  • Reducing the cognitive load of remembering maintenance schedules
  • Providing automated service reminders based on mileage, manufacturer recommendations, and past service history
  • Enabling easy scheduling with nearby service providers
  • Offering a guides feature for finding how-to’s for various automotive service procedures
  • Creating a user-friendly interface that simplifies the entire process

Team & Role

As the UX/UI Designer and Researcher, I led the end-to-end design process, from user research to wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing. My responsibilities included:

Collaborating with developers to ensure seamless implementation

Conducting user research to understand pain points

Creating user personas based on research insights

Developing wireframes and prototypes

Iterating designs based on usability testing feedback

Team Collaboration

  • Mentor: Provided feedback and helped refine the research and design decisions
  • Users (Beta Testers): Gave insights during testing, leading to critical refinements

User Research & Problem Discovery

To understand user needs, we conducted surveys and interviews with car owners and auto service professionals. Key findings included:

  • 76% of users admitted they often forget routine car maintenance
  • 58% relied on dealership reminders, which were often inconsistent
  • Majority preferred a mobile app over traditional paper logbooks

User Personas

Based on the research, we created two primary user personas:

New & Casual Car Owners – Lack knowledge about service intervals and want guidance

Busy Professionals – Need automated reminders due to hectic schedules

Wireframing & Prototyping

I developed low-fidelity wireframes to map out the user flow, ensuring a smooth experience. Once validated, we moved to high-fidelity interactive prototypes in Figma, incorporating intuitive navigation, a visually appealing UI, and clear CTA buttons.

Key Features & Design Decisions

  • Smart Reminders: Push notifications based on driving patterns and mileage
  • Service Booking: Users can schedule services with local mechanics instantly
  • Service & Repair Guides: A digital guide for most auto repairs, tailored to user’s vehicles
  • Simple Dashboard: Minimalist design with clear, actionable insights

Usability Testing

Improved Key Screen navigation for better user engagement.

Conducted A/B testing to refine key interactions.

Identified and fixed friction points in the booking process.

Learnings & Takeaways

This project reinforced the importance of user-centered design and iterative testing. Key learnings include:

  • Research-Driven Decisions: The insights from user research heavily influenced our design choices, ensuring the app met real user needs.
  • Iterate Early and Often: Usability testing revealed issues we hadn’t anticipated, underscoring the need for continuous refinement.
  • Collaboration is Key: Working closely with developers helped bridge the gap between design and implementation, ensuring feasibility.
  • Prioritizing Simplicity: A clean, straightforward interface improved user engagement and satisfaction.

What I Would Do Differently

If given more time, I would:

  • Conduct a longitudinal study to observe user behavior over several months
  • Implement AI-driven recommendations for predictive maintenance
  • Expand integration with third-party service providers for seamless scheduling

Final Thoughts

Designing Automate was a rewarding experience that strengthened my UX research, UI design, and problem-solving skills. This case study represents not just an app, but a real solution to a common problem, making car maintenance hassle-free for users. I am excited to continue refining this project and exploring new ways to enhance the user experience.
